In view of that, I tender this: This gets pretty close to what Alan Moore (creator) had in mind in Watchmen--only he imagines something much darker and more harmful. He's not wrong, in my opinion. Not altogether, anyway.

So your homework, class--how might this idea (from the link above) be brought into conversation with the Gospel? Or, to sound less emergentish, what does the Gospel speak to such things?

Sound Words on Sound Doctrine

When engaged in polemics it does not take too long before strong words can be spoken against your character. The great New Testament scholar Gresham Machen was often vilified and subject to personal attacks. Why does this happen and how should you handle it?

Expect it. Those who teach aberrant doctrine successfully are always, always possessed of two qualities – pride and intelligence. Both of these will often feature in their defense against critiques of their work.Be determined to know their view (and to be able to articulate it) better than they know it themselves. If you cannot to state the position of your opponent, in your own words, in a way in which they can recognize themselves, then you do not yet understand your opponent’s position and you are not yet ready to enter into polemics with it. Following this counsel would, by the way, cut out 99% of theological discussion on the internet! Refuse to take the insults thrown back at you personally. You are a servant of the word. And if a servant, you must be prepared to be treated like a servant. The only thing that matters is the glory of God, the vindication of the word, the upholding of the truth, the faithful proclamation of the Gospel and the good of souls. Let them cast what aspersions they may. You only crave the affirmation of One.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum...

I was accosted by a Jehovah's Witness today in Panera. He saw me studying Genesis and sat down to talk Scripture with me for a good 30-45 minutes. At first, I felt rather unprepared for the exchange--I'd been slack in devotions lately, busy with work, and awfully short-tempered thanks to that combination. The gentleman didn't identify himself as a JW either--it wasn't until he wanted to debate the finer points of eschatology, the Name of God, and the Trinity (within about 10 minutes of our conversation) that I realized what was going on.

This isn't the first time I've had encounters like these, by any means--but today really made me stop and think and thank God for Scripture. I'd come across the following in Calvin not long ago (see--I told you I'd get to him sooner or later!):

"...when [Isaiah] says, 'My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever,' he does not tie down the ancient Church to external doctrine, as he were a mere teacher of elements; he rather shows that, under the reign of Christ, the true and full felicity of the new Church will consist in their being ruled not less by the Word than by the Spirit of God."
(Insitutes, 1.ix.1; trans. Beveridge)

Calvin says something here that I think is so profound: that the Church's "true and full felicity"--in other words, her joy, her happiness, and her utter delight--is in her submission to Scripture and to the Holy Spirit.

This is what the JW who spoke to me today didn't have. He acknowledged Scripture to a point, but rested equally on his own reason and judgment. To couch this in the language of the Colossians sermon I gave last week (and will be giving again tomorrow to a local Korean church), the Gospel wasn't enough for this man.

May God grant this gentleman eyes to see and a heart to respond to the cry of the Gospel--and may He grant me a heart to treasure and prize the Gospel far, far more.

My plans to cover some Calvin this past weekend and post my sermon notes from last Thursday at UT's Chi Alpha were derailed a bit. Today, I'll give the sermon notes, and later this week it's Calvin's Institutes or BUST!

“The Supremacy and Sufficiency of the Gospel”

I. Intro

Eliot Spitzer appeared to have the kind of life all the world envied. He came from a wealthy family. He’d flourished at school, earning 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT, graduating with an undergraduate degree from Princeton and a doctorate in law from Harvard. He had been married for more than 20 years. He’d earned a spectacular reputation as New York’s attorney general, where he’d been instrumental in bringing down the Gambino crime family. He was elected governor of New York in 2006 after winning 69% of the vote, crushing his Republican and Libertarian opponents. He was also a keen observer at the national level—early in 2008, well before the economy fully tanked, he published a piece in the New York Times warning about the dangers of predatory lending well before many others were aware of the problem.

But in March of last year, all of this came tumbling down, as Spitzer was caught by police while attempting to solicit the services of a prostitute. The aftermath of all this, as you can imagine, was colossal: a wrecked marriage, a ruined reputation, a highly successful career irreparably destroyed, and so forth. As you can also probably imagine, this story provoked a feeding frenzy among op-ed writers all around the country.

One article in particular fascinated me. David Segal of The Washington Post wrote an article just after the story broke last March that started out with something I think was on the minds of a lot of people who followed this story: “What was he thinking?” Segal couldn’t understand how a man like Spitzer—rich, famous, powerful, respected, beloved—seemed to feel that everything he had and all his achievements simply weren’t enough! How could it be that all that money, all that fame, all that power, all that success utterly failed to satisfy a man like Spitzer???

What a profound question—profound not because it tells us anything special about Eliot Spitzer necessarily, but profound because it’s such a universal problem. Who among us hasn’t struggled with the problem of satisfaction? Who among us hasn’t gotten tangled up in greed, or lust, or covetousness? Who among us hasn’t found themselves thinking, “Things would be so much better for me if only I had X, or could do X, or had experienced X”?

II. Text

That kind of question is what the Apostle Paul is addressing in his letter to the Colossians. One of the things I love about this letter is that Paul (as he does so often) is writing to a 1st Century church with 21st Century problems.

The church at 1st Century Colossae was a good deal like the church in 21st Century America. It was full of genuine, precious people—but people who struggled with the same issues of satisfaction and fulfillment that we all do. Furthermore, Colossae in the 1st Century was, like America today, a major center of trade and culture, and it was permeated by an atmosphere of religious pluralism—the various pagan religions all thrived, as did Judaism and apparently even Christianity. And in the midst of all these things, the Colossians were encountering another problem: false teachers were on the rise, advocating an amalgam of all the things the Colossians would have been encountering in the culture at large around them—the false teaching seems to have interwoven elements of pagan philosophy, Judaism, asceticism, and Jewish and pagan mysticism. Just like America today, Colossae back then was a melting pot, and just like in the American church today, that environment coupled with the universal struggle fallen sinners have with fulfillment and satisfaction made the Colossian Christians especially vulnerable to false teaching.

So the question for the Colossians (and for us) is the same that it was for Eliot Spitzer: What is it that satisfies us? What’s really ENOUGH for us? Where do we find genuine, abiding, lasting fulfillment? And what’s at stake for the Colossians—and what’s at stake for you and me today—is the same thing that was at stake for Eliot Spitzer: Our name. Our integrity. Our reputation, and consequently the reputation of our Lord. Where Christians find their satisfaction tells the world where their treasure lies. All the world is watching to see whether the Gospel we proclaim is really ENOUGH for us.

***Brothers and sisters—is the Gospel of Jesus Christ truly ENOUGH for you? Is it SUFFICIENT? Is that where your treasure lies?***

You see, for Paul, this was the essence of the entire issue for the Colossian believers. In the midst of false teaching, he calls upon them to cultivate an awareness of the majesty and supremacy of Jesus Christ, and in that awareness to recognize that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is sufficient to deal with every need, every desire, every aspect of the Christian life and witness. Walking in holiness? The Gospel is enough. Knowing God? The Gospel is enough. Evangelism? The Gospel is enough. Having communion with God? The Gospel is enough. Assurance of salvation? The Gospel is enough. Listen to what Paul says here, brothers and sisters—this is one of the most precious passages in all the New Testament:

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.” (1:15-23, ESV)

This is the heart of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, and it’s the heart of God for the church in America and all over the world today: that we would know and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and in knowing Him, that we would know the sufficiency of His Gospel to meet our every need.

Brothers and sisters, do we TRULY acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the Supremacy of His Gospel? Do we TREASURE Him, not only in His Majesty and Sovereignty, but also in His Sufficiency? ***Is Jesus Christ TRULY “enough” for us today?***

According to Colossians 2:16-21, that’s exactly where the false teaching was going wrong…not unlike the heresy that Paul dealt with in the letter to the Galatians, it was making the fundamental assumption that the Gospel in and of itself just wasn’t enough: to it, believers were expected to add acts of extreme asceticism (fasting, abstinence, self-denial); they were expected to obey certain aspects of Jewish ceremonial law (Sabbath days, special festivals, circumcision, and so forth); they were expected to pursue ‘spiritual’ visions and dreams and angelic visitations and profound supernatural experiences as a way of obtaining special, private, personal revelation from God.

All these things, beloved, sound just ridiculous when we try to say that they’re necessary for believers to have or experience in addition to the Gospel. Think about what the Gospel means: it means that the God of the Universe sent His One and Only Son, born in the flesh, to die the death of a rebel slave on a tree, suffering the full measure of God’s Wrath against sinners on behalf of people who hated Him. The Gospel means that God gave EVERYTHING when WE could give NOTHING. The Gospel means that Jesus Christ suffers the wrath, and we receive the grace. Who on earth is so completely arrogant as to think of adding anything to that?

Listen to what Paul says about Jesus:

1. “He is the image of the invisible God” (v. 15); think about how profound and beautiful this idea is: no human being has ever seen God—but Jesus Christ is His Image: His perfect likeness and exact representation. His complete, consummate, ultimate Revelation of Himself. The writer of Hebrews really understands this, and he tells us the following:

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom he also created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” (1:1-4)

This is also the heart of Paul for the Colossians, and the heart of God for us, beloved—to know Jesus Christ is to know God, fully and completely. This is what Paul means later on when he tells the Colossians that Jesus Christ is the one “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (2:3)—think about that: In Christ are ALL the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…and not only that, but in Christ are all the TREASURES of wisdom and knowledge! If we want to know God, beloved, we have to look to the Gospel of His Son; there and ONLY there will we find true knowledge. There and ONLY there will we find true wisdom.

2. Paul goes on, telling the Colossians that Jesus Christ is “the firstborn of [this means “over” as in the NIV] all creation…FOR…all things were created through Him and for Him” (v. 15-16). Paul presents Christ here as the agent OF God’s Creation (see John 1:1-3ff, Prov. 8:22-36), the Lord OVER God’s Creation (Phil. 2:9-10, Rev. 17:14), and he also says here that Christ’s Glory is the GOAL of all creation (Eph. 1:11-12, John 11:1-4).

***Brothers and sisters, is Paul’s vision of Christ in His Majesty and Supremacy YOUR vision of Christ? Is this Jesus that Paul preaches the Jesus you trust for your salvation? Is this Jesus that Paul preaches the ONLY One you’re trusting to help you know and obey God? If not, WHY???***

3. Jesus Christ, Paul continues, “is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (17). Note here, as well as in vv.15-16, the repetition: “all things…all things…all things…all things”; Paul, like me, isn’t exactly known for his subtlety—but even for him, this is laying it on a little thick! But Paul wants very much here to emphasize this point: Christ is Sovereign Lord over ALL THINGS: every rose, every penguin, every butterfly, every koala bear…and also every cockroach, every crocodile, every mosquito, every patch of poison ivy—and also every drop in the Dow Jones, every lost job, every ulcer of every husband and father who’s worried and stressed about the economy. Christ is Lord over ALL these things, and ALL these things exist to show forth His Glory.

Brothers and sisters, this is a tough idea. We don’t always like it. Sometimes it sticks in our throats—mine as well. BUT IT’S ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE TO PAUL’S ARGUMENT HERE. THE GOSPEL CAN’T EVER BE ENOUGH FOR US IF GOD ISN’T SOVEREIGN OVER ALL THINGS. The one area of our lives that we believe God doesn’t control and own absolutely is the one area we will NEVER surrender to His Gospel. If you don’t really believe God owns and controls your finances, you won’t submit them to Him. If you don’t really believe Christ is Lord over your relationships, you won’t treat others the way He demands. If you don’t really believe Christ is Lord over your words, you won’t care how you speak. If you don’t believe Christ is Lord over your mind, you won’t care about how you think, what you watch, etc. Beloved, this is unacceptable. Christ doesn’t want part of you. He wants ALL of you, because your WHOLE LIFE was created to demonstrate His Glory and His Goodness. This is what John is getting at in chapter 9 of his Gospel:

“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.’” (v. 1-3)

This man’s about 30 years old or so, and Jesus says one of the most shocking things in all of Scripture: He tells us that this man’s blindness from birth—and consequently every MINUTE of that 30 or so YEARS of suffering—was for the PURPOSE of displaying God’s mighty works by the hand of Jesus. I heard a popular evangelical leader not long ago talk about prayer and healing, and he said that when we pray and someone isn’t healed, it must be because we lacked something on our end—faith, the knowledge of God, whatever. What nonsense, brothers and sisters! What damnable and ungodly nonsense that is—it turns all of Christianity on its head. All of a sudden, God’s Power to heal depends on our ability to pray?

This is where I am, beloved—we found out last week we just had another miscarriage. That makes two in a row for us. I say that because it’s one thing to talk about suffering like it’s an academic problem, but it’s not for me, and it certainly isn’t for my bride. And think about how godless and offensive the teaching I just talked about really is—if we lost these babies because I wasn’t praying right, what exactly do I need to do the next time? Did I not pray long enough? Would 15 minutes longer everyday have been enough? What if I’d only prayed fourteen and a half minutes? Is that 30 seconds really what determines God’s ability and willingness to save my baby? What would this teacher say about our last one—we didn’t even know for sure we were pregnant! How were we supposed to pray to keep this from happening?

I beg of you, beloved—don’t fall for hucksters like that. Don’t think of the Gospel as though it’s something that depends on our effort, our mystical disciplines, our knowledge, our will power. Brothers and sisters, the only thing that can really speak to suffering like this is the Gospel. IF THE GOSPEL ISN’T TRUE NOW, THEN IT NEVER EVER WAS. AND IF THE GOSPEL CAN’T SPEAK TO THIS—IF THE GOSPEL DOESN’T HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THIS—IF JESUS CHRIST ISN’T GLORIFIED IN THIS, THEN NONE OF IT MATTERS. “MEANINGLESS! MEANINGLESS! SAYS THE TEACHER—ALL IS MEANINGLESS.” We must have a Gospel that’s not only glorious to behold, but sufficient to meet our needs, beloved.

4. Back to Paul: “He is the Head of the body, the church” (18); notice how Paul has shifted from Christ’s Lordship over Creation to His Lordship over the NEW Creation—the community of the redeemed, the church. “Head” here refers to Christ as the source of the church and as the authority Who RULES the church. When Paul goes on here to say that Christ is “the firstborn from the dead THAT [i.e., “so that”, “in order that”] in everything He might be preeminent [NIV = “have the supremacy”],” He’s expressing the same idea as in 15-16—Christ created and reigns over His Church, and the Church exists for His Glory and Good Pleasure.

5. “For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (19)—Christ is preeminent, or has the supremacy, above all things (v. 18) because in Him dwells all the fullness of God, or even (as Douglas Moo tells us), “God in all His Fullness.” Here we begin to see ever more clearly not only the SUPREMACY of Christ, but the SUFFICIENCY of Christ. If ALL the fullness of God abides in Jesus, and all the FULLNESS of God abides in Jesus, then Christ and His Gospel are and MUST BE all we could ever possibly need—and Paul goes even further when he tells the Ephesians that we “were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance” (1:13-14). Again, beloved—who on earth is so arrogant as to think that we need to ADD anything to this??? Do we begin to see, brothers and sisters, why that kind of thinking is so repulsive to God? Has He given His ALL, and yet we feel the need to add to it as though God’s best isn’t enough?
6. Paul tells us that God’s intention in His Gospel is “through Him [i.e., through Christ] to reconcile to Himself all things…making peace by the blood of His Cross” (20). Note once again—“all things.” This is exactly why the Gospel has to be enough for us, beloved—because Paul says that it’s enough for ALL CREATION. The thought here is similar to Romans 8:19-21:
“For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.”
***Brothers and sisters, is Paul’s view of the Gospel YOUR view of the Gospel? Is this Gospel, which Paul says is enough to redeem an entire universe that’s been twisted and warped and mangled by the fall—is THIS the Gospel in which you believe? Is this Gospel ENOUGH for you tonight, or are you seeking fulfillment and satisfaction in something else?***
But it gets even better—when he says, “making peace by the blood of His Cross,” Paul begins to go further still for the Colossians. Not wanting them to think of redemption solely in abstract, cosmic terms (though it is certainly that), he brings it home to them in a personal, experiential way:
“And you, who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.” (v. 21-23)
Paul brings it all home with this passage: the Gospel that portrays Christ as Lord over all Creation, Lord and Head over the church, the One Whom all things were created to glorify—this eternal Gospel is also a PERSONAL Gospel, and the message of it is that God in all His Fullness has given of Himself to redeem us so that we can be holy and blameless. Beloved, what more can there POSSIBLY be for us?

This is where I start to think of Spitzer. I’m tempted to blast the man, just like so many of the newspapers and commentators: how could he have been so foolish and hard-hearted and self-absorbed that he failed to value and cherish everything he had? What arrogance! What ingratitude!

But then I’m convicted, beloved—because I know that in a thousand, thousand ways I’ve done far, far worse: I’ve lived as though the Cross didn’t matter. I’ve skipped through the New Testament and haven’t stopped to think about how AMAZING it is that God should send His Son to suffer and die for me when I HATED Him. I’ve longed for spectacular, sensational experiences—healings, angelic visitations, manifestations of the Spirit—to demonstrate the Awesomeness of God, when I’ve neglected the Greatest Demonstration of all: Romans 3—God demonstrating BOTH His unfathomable Mercy AND the endless perfections of His Justice in the Person of Jesus on the Cross. I’ve wanted manna from Heaven when I had the Bread of Life in front of me.

It’s when I stop and think about this that I Thank God for things like our miscarriages—anything that drives me closer to the Cross is something I rejoice in. Anything that reminds me that I’m weak, that I’m desperate, anything that reminds me that without the Gospel of Free Grace for sinners I have NOTHING—whatever it takes, that’s what I want.

Brothers and sisters, that’s God’s heart for all of us tonight, and that’s my heart’s prayer for you all—that Jesus Christ would be truly Supreme in your eyes, and that His Gospel would really, truly, genuinely be ENOUGH for you tonight.

If you’re here, and you know that your Gospel isn’t the Gospel we’ve been talking about here tonight—if it doesn’t speak to every area of human existence, and if it doesn’t make demands of every area of your life—then you need to repent. You’ve pursued a false Gospel, and you’re searching for satisfaction where it was never meant to be found. And I can tell you from experience that doing so will ALWAYS disappoint. The false Gospels are never going to be able to meet all your needs, and at some point in your life you will face some kind of trial that a false Gospel can’t address. Remember what the writer of Ecclesiastes tells us: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, BEFORE the days of trouble come” (12:1). If the Gospel you believe in isn’t enough NOW, when you’re comfortable, when you’re well-fed, when you’re at ease…then it will NEVER be enough for you. Repent, brothers and sisters, and cry out to God to give you a fresh vision of the Majesty, Glory, and SUFFICIENCY of the Gospel.

Or it may be that you’re here and you know that you’ve lived your entire life as though the Gospel doesn’t matter at all: you’ve given little or no thought to the Cross, little or no thought to your sin, little or no thought to God’s Holiness. I pray you’d open your eyes right now to the truth of the Gospel: God’s WRATH—His pure and perfect HATRED of sin in all its forms—rests on you. When you stand before a Holy God, and He asks you, “Why should I let you—a sinner, an oath-breaker, a murderer, a liar, an adulterer, an idolater, a God-hater—why should I let you into My Heaven?”—what will you say? Know that this night you can be saved—you can turn to the Cross, repent of your sin, and believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved from God’s Holy Judgment. Do so now. Do not wait another moment, because you don’t know how many more moments you have. Let no one here wait for any reason to do business with God—if you wait because you don’t think you’re holy enough, you never will be. If you wait because you don’t think you’re good enough, you never will be. The Gospel is enough, brothers and sisters—as one of my favorite writers, Jerry Bridges, would say, not only is it the most IMPORTANT thing you’ll ever hear; it’s the only ESSENTIAL thing you’ll ever hear. Believe on the Lord Jesus. Salvation may be found in no other.

Let us pray.

I'll be posting a sermon I preached for Chi Alpha at the University of Tennessee last night shortly, and (God willing) some reflections on Calvin's (wildly awesome) Institutes over the weekend, but for now, just a few items of interest:

In an effort to blog more consistently, I'm trying to be content with posts that, while not as in-depth as I might prefer (I adhere to the old English major rule of thumb that says, "Never use one word when ten will do"), still provide food for thought.

In this case, as part of an impressive series they've been doing all year on church history, Fred Sanders and the fine folks at Scriptorium Daily remind us that today is the 1,116th anniversary of the death of Photius of Constantinople.

I've enjoyed this series immensely--these are very lucid, thought-provoking vignettes of some of the heroes and high points (and not-so-much) of Christ's bride the church. They also strike an all-too-needed balance between respect for tradition and the authority of Scripture.

Case in point from Sanders' post on the Council of Trent:

"John Calvin, for his part, took the only consistent stance possible, and argued that he and his people did not leave the Roman church: that church left the Bible, and the Reformed were standing right there where the Bible had always been, waving goodbye to the Romans and their deviations. Calvin’s response to the Council of Trent was to say that it wasn’t really an ecumenical council, it was an Italian council, since the Protestants and the Eastern churches weren’t invited. He also argued at great length that the great tradition was in essence on the side of sola scriptura and sola fide, citing church fathers voluminously to argue that Rome had deviated from that line only relatively recently. Calvin, in other words, would prefer the diagram that shows one central stream with a small spur, but the central stream would be labeled “Biblical Christianity,” with a little Catholic spur deviating from it and heading off in its own direction as the Roman Catholic denomination. There’s something to be said for that account. But at the very least, the vigor, clarity, and consolidation of Tridentine Catholicism gives it a recognizable profile that is distinguishable from the great Christian tradition at large."

In a town there lived a very wise and famous doctor, whose skill, expertise, and great success were renowned the whole world over. One day, three men in various parts of the town each awoke to find themselves feeling completely horrible.

The first man was a personal trainer, very wealthy and extremely well-respected throughout the region, for he had trained several Olympic and professional athletes and was himself seemingly a paragon of physical perfection. Fearing some damage to his reputation and a loss of income should he be bedridden, however, the trainer decided not to visit the doctor, instead committing himself to a more intense exercise regimen and a far more severe diet. The symptoms he'd been experiencing--while they didn't stop altogether--subsided dramatically, and the trainer continued his extreme disciplines for the next several years, until he was discovered dead of a heart attack one morning, having collapsed at his BowFlex machine.

The second man was also very wealthy, for he was an extremely successful pharmacist who also occasionally served as a distinguished guest lecturer at the local university medical school. He himself had degrees from several Ivy League schools, and had not infrequently published highly regarded articles in all the major trade publications. Having decided to check in with the doctor--one medical expert to another--he strolled in unannounced to the doctor's office one day. The doctor listened patiently, but explained to the pharmacist that he'd have to make an appointment and wait in the lobby with the other patients until the appointed time. Greatly offended, the pharmacist stormed out of the office, resolving silently that he'd never offer THAT doctor the benefit of HIS expertise again any time soon! Returning to his own practice, he began medicating his symptoms one by one. Like the physical trainer, the pharmacist began to experience some relief from his initial symptoms. However, over time these gave way to different systems that responded less well to his medications. Eventually, the pharmacist even found that the drugs he was taking sometimes caused even more pain than the sickness itself. Despairing, he eventually took his own life some years later.

The third man was homeless, unemployed, and uninsured. He'd never heard of the doctor (having no great interest in medical things), but the manager of the local soup kitchen he frequented had grown concerned, and had browbeaten and cajoled and begged him to at least try asking whether the doctor would examine him anyway. Reluctantly, the man agreed and went to the office. He waited until the receptionist at the front desk seemed to no longer be so busy. He explained his situation and his ailment as best he could, expecting more than a little to be turned away uncermoniously. To his great surprise, however, the doctor agreed to not only see him, but to treat him as well!

"But I don't have any insurance or any money!" the man exclaimed to the doctor incredulously.

"That's okay," replied the Doctor. "I can afford to treat you Myself, and I'm not worried about a malpractice suit."

"But I'm in terrible shape!"

"Of course you are! You wouldn't BE here if you weren't!"

"But I don't even know what's wrong with me!" the man exclaimed, still flabbergasted.

"That's okay, too," the Doctor said, smiling. "I'm the Physician here, and not only can I tell you exactly what's wrong with you, I can even heal you as well!"

"So it's not that serious, then?" the man asked, relaxing a bit.

"On the contrary--it's MORTALLY serious. Again, though, you don't have to worry...I am a GREAT Physician."

The man trusted the Physician and listened carefully to all he was told to do. Funnily enough, however, he wasn't asked to do anything at all, really--the Physician developed antibodies from His Own Blood that the man could feel beginning to work at once. They didn't completely eradicate the symptoms immediately, but he felt better than he ever had and he knew that over time the medicine would take its full effect.

Energized and feeling stronger than he could ever remember feeling, the man began to take better care of his physical condition. And even though the Physician insisted that the man didn't owe Him anything, the man's gratitude and joy were not to be denied--he volunteered at the office as often as he could, provided testimonials to all his friends and neighbor's of how the Physician had healed him, and for the rest of his days strove above all else to serve and honor the One Who had saved him.

Colossians--The Supreme Sufficiency of Christ

Just started reading Douglas Moo's new Pillar NTC Commentary on Colossians and Philemon.

Thus far, I've been very impressed with the Pillar NTC series (though, admittedly, D.A. Carson's The Gospel According to John sets the bar rather high!). So far, Moo is entirely living up to expectations. (Not that this is terribly surprising, of course--his NICNT commentary on Romans remains the best such work in the English language...and that from such a discerning reader as Carson!)

Colossians is a letter I've been turning to a lot lately; the picture there of Christ in all His Glorious Majesty boggles the mind:

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross." (1:15-20, ESV)

What rich, profound thoughts these are! And yet, I find myself convicted in that, like I do all too often, I encounter passages such as these and pass too quickly over them, not savoring or delighting in them as I ought, not considering what enormous consequences there are to such concepts.It's one thing, after all, to talk blithely (and even dismissively) of "the supremacy of Christ"...I've yet to meet a professing Christian who argues otherwise, of course. And yet, ought not the SUPREMACY of Christ necessarily entail the SUFFICIENCY of Christ?

This is a challenging notion for me--how often have I really considered what it means for God's Grace in Christ to be "sufficient" for me? How often do I content myself with a superficial acknowledgment that "yes, Christ is indeed great and glorious and above all," without considering that what that must necessarily mean is that in Christ God has given me absolutely EVERYTHING I could possibly need?

"The false teachers [at Colossae] were appealing to spiritual beings, visions, and rules to find security in this very uncertain universe. In doing so, they were questioning the sufficiency of Christ. They may have done so directly, but it is more likely that their questions about Christ were implicit in their approach and that it is Paul who draws out the implications of this "philosophy" for Christology. The false teachers were so preoccupied with their own program for spiritual fullness that they were separating themselves from the only true source of spiritual power: the Lord Jesus Christ, the one in whom God in all his fullness is to be found and the one through whom God has accomplished the reconciliation of the world. Here is the essence of the false teaching: it is "not according to Christ" (2:8). And, at the risk of generalizing unduly, we might suggest that here as well is the point of contact for the application of the message of Colossians to a wide variety of historical and contemporary teachings. Any teaching that questions the sufficiency of Christ--not only for "initial" salvation but also for spiritual growth and ultimate salvation from judgment--falls under the massive christological critique of Colossians." (Moo, p. 60)

A Hard Lesson in Thanksgiving: Miscarriage and the Goodness of God

Over Thanksgiving, I was challenged by one of the blogs I frequent. To wit:

Scripture says that one of the marks of the Spirit-filled believer is that he gives "thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:20). In fact, we're flat-out commanded to "give thanks in all circumstances" — and, as if that's not enough, Paul adds, "for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Quite apart from the shocking challenge of Scripture, I realized I'd never quite followed up on something I said I would do. Last month, my wife and I were expecting our first child, and we suffered a miscarriage. At least, that's what it's called...but "miscarriage" is such a clinical, impersonal word to describe something as intensely personal and painful as anything I've ever felt. This was a death in the family, and no amount of obfuscating can cover that visceral, palpable sense of loss. And yet, Dan's words above are entirely true: Christ-followers ARE commanded to "give thanks in all circumstances" precisely because doing so "is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

And so, as part of my journey here, fellow travelers, I try to make sense of all this, to consider why and how I ought to give thanks to God for my grief and loss. This runs quite contrary to much of the advice I received in the wake of our loss--advice that counseled me NOT to think about these things, NOT to attempt to understand them, NOT to analyze them. I have profound problems with this advice, though--especially regarding the whole notion of 'analyzing' our suffering. I'm not entirely sure what that means. If, by "don't try to analyze it," my friends (who mean well, to be sure) simply mean, "don't dwell on it," then I have no quarrel with that. We are solemnly commanded (for some incredibly important reasons!), to "not grieve as others do who have no hope," after all.

But I have my doubts that this is what my brothers and sisters who encouraged me in this way really mean by "don't try to analyze it"...all too often in the current climate of American evangelicalism, "don't try to analyze your suffering" secretly means, "God had nothing to do with your situation, so stop trying to assess it in those terms." I wonder, though, what sort of comfort this (wholly unbiblical, let us say) 'wisdom' is supposed to offer. The person who offers this platitude (again, doubtless meaning very well by doing so) seems to be saying one of two things. They seem to mean either (A) "God is not 'behind' your suffering in any meaningful sense--there is, after all, a real devil in the world"; or else (B) "Your suffering, unfortunately, is ultimately your own--God absolutely blesses and relieves from suffering anyone who is obedient to Him and who prays sincerely and fervently for their situation...you must've failed in one of those areas, or else you wouldn't be in this situation."

Let me say from the onset that I don't believe any of the people who offered me the advice in question deliberately intended to mean (B) at all. At least, I would sincerely hope not! Yet this kind of thinking is a necessary consequence of the kind of approach so many contemporary evangelicals take toward prayer and faith: if it's always God's Will to heal, and if it's true that "All lack is on our end of the equation," then anyone who is NOT healed, by necessity, has only themselves to thank, whether because they never had sufficient faith or because they're in some kind of egregious sin.

John chapter 9 makes very short work of this particular brand of nonsense:

"As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him." (v. 1-3)

This was a man blind from birth, and in the one place where Jesus has a prime opportunity to put to rest any false notions the disciples might have about God causing this person to be born blind (meaning it would have been a condition he had suffered with for decades), Jesus instead says that THE reason for this man's suffering was "that the works of God might be displayed in him." Notice, beloved, what Jesus does NOT say: He does NOT say, "Had this man or his family or the people praying for him only demonstrated more faith or more obedience, he would no longer be blind." Likewise, He makes no attempt to say anything approximating, "This man's blindness has nothing to do with God--it's simply a work of the devil." When asked about the cause of this man's blindness--and consequently the 20-30 years of suffering he endured on account of it--Jesus told His disciples that this blindness was ordained by God.

So I don't see at all the value of denying that God is sovereign over my suffering. Indeed, I don't see that there can be any hope in the midst of suffering at ALL if God isn't sovereign over it; if I get sick because of an attack of the enemy that God couldn't stop, how can I really trust Him to heal me? If God is absolutely opposed to sickness and suffering, then how comes it to happen in the first place? Did my baby really die because I didn't pray hard enough? (That's the conclusion at which we'd arrive if we took men like Bill Johnson seriously.) If so, what would the "magic prayer time" have been? If I'd prayed 15 minutes longer everyday, would that have "released God" (whatever that means) to heal my baby? How, then, if I'd only prayed 14 minutes and 30 seconds more everyday? Did I simply not use the right words? If so, what spell or incantation might I have used to conjure God's healing power? This, brothers and sisters, is the kind of arrant nonsense we face if we consistently deny the sovereignty of God in our suffering.

Now, having said all that, what can I take from this situation? Given that Scripture affirms the sovereignty of God over human pain and suffering (for other examples see here; another very good resource is actually available for free online in its entirety on PDF), what kinds of things should I give thanks for in the aftermath of something that hurt so deeply and bitterly? I desperately want to have the apostle Peter's vision, and genuinely say, along with him:

"Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (1:1-7)

You see, what Peter does here is so beautiful and precious! Writing to fellow saints who are themselves suffering and enduring persecution, Peter immediately grounds his guidance to them in terms of God's eternal purpose of election and the fulfillment of His plan from before the foundation of the world (cf. 1:18-21) and reminds the churches that their hope lies not in their own strength, but in the living hope of Christ's Resurrection and the Promised Inheritance of that Resurrection (i.e., eternal life), which in turn is kept (as they themsleves are) by the Power of God. Moreover, Peter says to these churches that the goal of their suffering is that it "may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ"; they suffer, in other words, that in their suffering the magnificence and splendor of Jesus Christ may be made known, in the interim by the victorious genuineness of their faith, but ultimately at the last day when God's People are vindicated in Christ's return. In fact, Peter's argument here is a great deal like the Apostle Paul's (much more famous) argument in Romans:

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, 'For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.' No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (8:28-39)

Again, we have as the ground of our hope in the midst of suffering God's Sovereign Purpose of election and His determination to save those whom He foreknew. Precisely because God has laid in place this great plan of salvation, we may have hope that "for those who love God all things work together for good." And, Paul says, because of this we can know for a certainty that "IN all these things" (not "in spite of", not "instead of") we prove victorious--"more than conquerors."

And so Scripture gives the lie to any assumption that the believer's suffering and pain in this world are somehow beyond God's jurisdiction or outside the scope of His Sovereignty. So the question now is no longer "Must I worship God in spite of suffering?", but rather "How many ways can I be thankful for this?" As an answer, I offer the following:

I give Thanks to God for our miscarriage because...

1. Because it forced me to turn to Christ and to cast my cares upon Him by looking to His Cross and what He accomplished there. You see, at the core of the Gospel lies this precious, precious word we almost never think about anymore--John uses it in his first letter when he tells us that "In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (1:9-10).

That Christ is the propitiation for our sins means that in His Person He endured the full measure of all God's Wrath against our sin on the Cross, and that all the demands of God's Justice have been perfectly satisfied in Him, so that we who believe on Christ are counted righteous before God. This was God's Plan for salvation from before the foundation of the world, and when Christ on His Cross shouted, "Tetelestai!", it rendered certain the absolute fulfillment of every aspect of God's Plan. Human beings of themselves and their own efforts cannot satisfy the demands of God's Holiness--all our very best works carry with them the stain and reek of wickedness. But God in His Mercy has made a people who were dead in sin alive in Christ.

And where the rubber meets the road for me in the death of our baby is this: Jesus Christ the propitiation for sin means that God is not indifferent to suffering; indeed, it means that He actually understands it a good deal more thoroughly and more viscerally than I ever will. In the Cross, Jesus shows us that human beings MATTER, and we matter so much that the Only Son of God, the Lord of Glory, became a slave and endured scorn, derision, torture, and death to redeem us. And a God Who has shown us how deeply we matter to Him is a God in Whom I can place my trust.

2. Because in our miscarriage I had the opportunity to see the pure and precious and beautiful faith of my beautiful bride. Misty has handled her pain and sorrow with a faith and a hope that is encouraging and challenging and inspiring and amazing. What a great and glorious thing the Lord hath wrought in the heart of this precious saint! She is hourly, daily a reminder to me of God's overwhelming Goodness and Grace to me, a sinner. I would never have seen this faith shine so dazzlingly and brilliantly had it not been for the blackness and horror of the situation that called it forth, and so I give great thanks to my God to see all that He has done in her. Godliness is a jewel of matchless beauty, and my bride wears it well indeed!

3. Because I have a child who, even now, lives a life of imperishable, painless, eternal, and unblemished happiness. In His Presence there is fullness of joy and a life of which all that this world offers is only a shadow and a pale reflection. You see, the Gospel doesn't end on the cross--the bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ gives us absolute assurance that the sacrifice Jesus made on the Cross for our sins has been accepted by God, Who now counts all who believe on Christ as righteous and holy...indeed, because the righteousness of Jesus is imputed to us, we have absolute assurance that we too may partake in the resurrection life.

I love what Samuel Rutherford says in a letter he wrote to a mother who had lost her younger son:

"And therefore ye are to love that cross, because it was once on Christ's shoulders before you; so that by his own practice he hath over-gilded and covered your cross with the Mediator's lustre. The cup ye drink was at the lip of sweet Jesus, and he drank of it; and so it hath a smell of his breath. And I conceive ye love it not the worse, that it is thus sugared; therefore drink, and believe the resurrection of your son's body...And withal, if ye consider this, had ye been at his bedside, and should have seen Christ coming to him, ye would not, ye could not, have adjourned Christ's free love, who would want him no longer."

I feel this indescribable loss at not ever having had the pleasure of meeting my child...but I love him too little if I yearn to have him here instead of where he is now.

"Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven."

4. Because in all this, I am made to remember who I am. I am a sinner. I deserve wrath and hell and judgment and damnation for my sins, but in Christ Jesus God has offered His Son--His Only Son--to suffer in my place the punishment that I have earned by a lifetime of covenant-breaking, cross-defiling, grace-abusing, God-hating wickedness. All of the agony of this situation came upon me unbidden and unexpected. Yet God endured all this and far worse to save me when I hated Him. He did all this willingly for someone who was His enemy. How all this forces me to treasure and adore the matchless love of God in the gift of His Son Jesus!!!

5. Lastly, I rejoice in our miscarriage because by it I have the opportunity to share all this with you. Thinking and praying and searching the Scriptures for the last several weeks has renewed the deep and abiding passion I have to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I Thank God for anything He does that causes me to think on the Cross, to run to it and to explore and meditate upon and rejoice in the Awesome things that He has done. I Thank God for anything that gives to me the opportunity to share the Gospel I love with the people I love, and for the chance to challenge and exhort and encourage the church of Jesus Christ. May God richly bless you and reward you with Himself.
